Another Square in the Composition
For a few minutes, the artwork gained one more shape. Not on the canvas, but in front of it.
Modern art often divides people.
Some search for meaning. Others wonder if there is any at all.
Watching someone sit quietly in front of this painting reminded me that the conversation isn’t really about the artwork. It’s about the person standing, or sitting, in front of it.
From where I was standing, the visitor became part of the composition. Another rectangle. Another block of color, even dressed almost entirely in black. The painting extended beyond its frame and into the room.
Sometimes museums display paintings.
Sometimes they display the people looking at them.
